SUN COAST BEACON

OCTOBER 2011

GENDA’S AGENDA

Recently during one of our Sunday morning adult classes someone questioned what the Apostle Paul might have to say about life today if he were able to join us for a Sunday worship service at Sun Coast Christian. I certainly cannot put words in his mouth, but it seems to me that just as he had strong words to say to the members of the early churches in his day, so I would imagine he would have much to offer to us today as well.

In the society of Paul’s time he had to contend with false teachers, various forms of immorality, the effects of a strong government, divisiveness within the different factions of people, and other demands of his current culture. No doubt Paul had to contend with some interesting dimensions of life.

While we might not word it quite the same, if Paul were to drop in on us today, I believe he would observe a parallel situation in life. From false teachers who espouse a variety of “new age thoughts”, to a freedom of expression that invites the denigration of moral standards and values, to a powerful force found within civil government, to a multitude of cultures and hedonistic lifestyles - Paul might well feel as if today’s generation is no different than his generation of the past.

To this end this dedicated evangelist for Christ might well address us with the same force and conviction that he offered to the congregations at Ephesus, Thessalonica, Philippi and the other early church sites .

In fact Paul’s words to us might well echo the thoughts of caution and direction he offered to his dear young Christian friend, Timothy, when he was preparing Timothy for his challenging ministry at Ephesus.

In terms of people’s lifestyles, Paul warns:

“People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control,….lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,--” (II Timothy 3:1-4) “….For the time will come that men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires,, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” (II Timothy 4:3)

Counter to this worldly condition Paul challenged Timothy, and in a sense challenges us as well,--

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (II Timothy 3:14-17)

And so if Paul were able to return today and, experience life as we know it, he might well offer to all words similar to the above thoughts, challenging us to live a life far different than what we find in the reality of today’s world. Indeed, Paul calls you, to “continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of,…salvation through faith in Christ Jesus”

                            In His Way,                                                                                     Pastor Bill

Grass Skirts Optional

On Friday, October 14, 2011, Sun Coast will be transformed into a Hawaiian dining room offering a wonderful pulled pork dinner followed by exciting Polynesian dancing provided by Chief Kamu and his family of dancers. The program will include not only authentic dancing from our 50th state, but also a fire dance (performed outdoors on the church grounds) by Chief Kamu himself. In addition for the evening’s entertainment our own Bobby “Elvis” Bair will perform the song “Blue Hawaii” for those gathered.

The tickets for this fun-filled evening are $15 per person and $25 per couple. Tickets for children under the age of ten will be $7.50.

The evening also will offer the opportunity for people to purchase drawing tickets ($1. each) for a number of beautiful themed gift baskets and local merchant gift certificates. Ticket holders do not have to attend to be eligible to win these items.

We hope that everyone can share in this exciting fundraising event.

Stewardship Drive For 2012

Although 2012 is several weeks away Anita Kaufman, Chair of the Finance Ministry Team, reports that now is the time for our congregation to plan for the support of our ministry that will take place in the new year. An important part of this planning process, of course, is each member’s response in being a dedicated steward committed to serving the Lord within our fellowship.

During the month of October all of us will be challenged to offer a personal pledge of our God-given time, talent and financial resources toward the ongoing ministry of Sun Coast Christian.

Indeed, as God’s call goes forth in this special way, so may each of us view seriously our response to his invitation to unselfishly serve Him within our fellowship.

“Table For 2” Times 40

Our appreciation to Jim Lannoo, for donating ten new lightweight, heavy-duty plastic tables allowing us to seat 80 people for any event within our fellowship. This generous gift enabled us to discard the old heavier, broken wooden tables, making it much easier for the set-up of tables for meals and other activities at the church. Thank you, Jim.

“Scrubbing Bubbles” and “A Sign of the Times”

Using a portion of the recent $3,000 gift to Sun Coast, we recently were able to purchase a high-speed, commercial floor scrubber for the cleaning of the floor tile inside and outside of our building. Property Ministry Team Chair, Jay Kaufman, already has used the new machine and finds it makes a huge difference in the cleaning and upkeep of our porcelain floor tile.

In addition, this gift funded a complete new sign for our corner sign board outside of our building. With inaccurate information and fading lettering on the board it was time for a new sign. Evangelism Ministry Team Chair, Ron Williamson, was able to arrange for the new signage from the Sign It Quick Company. Our thanks to Ron and Jay Kaufman who provided the labor to clean off the old signage, prepare the board and add the new sign information. The new sign allows for more flexibility to change times for key events at Sun Coast.

“All Saints Sunday”

Sunday, November 6, 2011, is “All Saints Sunday” at Sun Coast. On this day we will remember any member, or immediate family member of any member, who has passed away during the previous year. If you have a family member that you would like to have honored during the worship service on that special day, please see Pastor Genda or Worship Ministry Team Chair, Pam Garbett.

Calling Pastor Bill

Pastor Bill and Lynn Genda are now back in their Pawleys Island home, so if you need to reach them call them at their home number (843) 235-6725.

New Directory

Church Secretary Ron Williamson has completed updating the new SCCC Phone/Address  Directory. Persons who have not received one, may pick up a copy from the registration table on Sunday mornings, or by calling the church office to arrange to get a copy.

Nursing Home Worship Service Participants Needed

Persons interested in joining to assist with a monthly worship service to be conducted at Myrtle Beach Manor on Highway 17 are asked to contact Ron Williamson. Already several folks have expressed a desire to participate. In the next few weeks Ron will be offering a meeting to discuss this ministry and the role people can play within it.

Sun Coast currently provides worship services at Myrtle Beach Estates led by Kathie and Ron Williamson on the second Thursday of each month and Pastor Bill and Lynn Genda on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Outreach Update

Outreach Ministry Team Chair, Jane Powell, announces that we are sending outreach dollars to the Canine Angels program and Alex McLean in his ministry to the underprivileged children of Andrus Island. Canine Angels offered a “Mission Moment” presentation to us during a worship service in September.

In the next few weeks we will be gathering gift items and postage money to provide filled shoe boxes for ”Operation Christmas Child”, a children’s evangelistic mission directed by Rev. Franklin Graham of Samaritan‘s Purse.

In addition, soon we will be holding a drive to provide needed blankets for local homeless people during the winter months.

Sun Coast Hosts The S.E. District

On Saturday, September 10th Sun Coast hosted the quarterly meeting of the S.E. District of the North Carolina Region of the Disciples of Christ-Christian Church. Complete with inspirational music provided by Bobby Bair and food prepared by our Sun Coast cooks under the direction of Community Ministry Team Chair, Sandy Smock, we had a wonderful time sharing with our Christian friends of the District. In all 46  people attended the meeting with sixteen of those from Sun Coast.

While distance and timing prevents Sun Coast from participating in many of the District meetings (normally held in North Carolina), it was wonderful to be able to fellowship with our Disciple brothers and sisters.

POET’S CORNER

Was a time

A time ago

I felt so much pain

Saw those gifts I’d been given

And watched them slide right down the drain.

That’s when Christ came to me,

He said “Hey, what ya doin?

That pain is there to learn from,

Only I can save you from ruin.”

I said “Oh, Lord I’m such a sinner,

How could You love me?”

He said “My child I died for you and I’ll live in you

If you’ll only let Me.

“All you have to do is claim My Love

And My Light will fill your heart.

You will be forgiven

And then you can make a new start.”

That’s when I said quietly,

“I believe Jesus died for my sins.

I’m ready to take His hand

And begin my walk with Him.”

A feeling of peace came over me

And I began to cry

I wasn’t sure how to pray,

But I decided to give it a try.

Now I know everything is gonna be all right

No matter what happens to me.

He shed His Blood so I might live

With Him for Eternity.

And when I lay down at night

I have no pain, no fear

I’m living for the Lord now

And I know He is always near.
